Dokis First Nation lies about an hour Southeast of Sudbury near Lake Nipissing. The community’s only road connection was built in 1955 and included a single lane Bailey Bridge over the Restoule River. Over 60 years later, the time had come to replace it and a tender call was issued by the Band Council.
Replaced 60-year-old Bailey Bridge
Algonquin Bridge is pleased to have been part of the winning bid team with our popular Compact 200 Mabey Modular Panel Bridge System. In fact, the winning bid was a full 1/3 less than the bid average — reaffirming why our Mabey Bridges are frequently selected for these types of replacement projects.
Algonquin is the exclusive Canadian Distributor for a range of Mabey Modular Panel Bridge Systems suitable for a wide variety of permanent or temporary applications, including rentals. And Mabey is an original manufacturer of the early Bailey Bridges that were made famous during World War II for their easy transport and deployment across the battlefields of Europe. Indeed, those engineering marvels are the inspiration behind Mabey’s current line of Modular Panel Bridge Systems.
First-time for crew installing this type of bridge
Speaking of easy deployment, the Algonquin Team stepped up our on-site services to support the contractor installing this type of bridge system for the first time. We provided a site advisor for three days of the five-day build. The initial time concentrated on the build methodology and our advisor returned for the day of the cantilevered launch sequence. The project included moving the older bridge to the side to serve as a detour bridge and replacing the abutment structures. The site was fairly constrained, so a larger excavator was used to provide more reach and better assembly speed.
The owner and their consultant were both onsite during the build. Post project contact with the owner confirmed that they were impressed by the installation method and very happy with the new bridge.
