Highway 599 is a secondary highway winding through 291 km of Northwestern Ontario wilderness connecting Highway 17 (the Trans Canada Highway) to remote First Nations communities and a gold mine. It is also the northern-most route maintained year round by the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO).
Algonquin Modular Panel Bridge ideal for remote location
Algonquin Bridge was recently involved in a bridge replacement project at Crow River, 27 km North of Pickle Lake. Our Algonquin Modular Panel Bridge system was selected for its ease of shipping and installation in remote locations like this one.
Quick install, limited road closure
The contractor, Sharp Group, is very experienced with bridges from Algonquin and it showed on this project. MTO allotted a four-day road closure for the bridge installation but Sharp didn’t need all of that time.
Cantilevered launch sequence used
The bridge was installed on new precast abutments using a cantilevered launch sequence with an excavator on each side and a crane for an added lift. Rip rap stone was added for scour protection. A girder from the old steel bridge, which was originally installed in 1964, served as a temporary gangway for crews to cross the river during installation.
The bridge was installed on July 20, a day when this area had the hottest recorded temperature in Canada. Our Algonquin Representative was on site providing some assistance and, since the crew was done ahead of schedule, he had some time to go fishing for some Walleye afterward.
