The Province of British Columbia and the Government of Canada are investing $85 million in the development and construction of the McKenzie Interchange Project, a new partial cloverleaf on the Trans-Canada Highway at the Intersection with Admirals Road and McKenzie Avenue in Saanich. The existing signalled intersection is the worst traffic bottleneck on Vancouver Island.

Mabey Compact 200 Modular Panel Bridge System
Phase 1 of this BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (BC MOTI) project includes the demolition of an existing pedestrian/cycle bridge and the installation of a longer, temporary bridge to reach across the widened site. The project partners chose an economical rental solution from Algonquin Bridge using our popular Mabey Compact 200 Modular Panel Bridge System.

Temporary bridge connects to existing ramp structure
The temporary replacement bridge tied in to an existing ramp structure and an extensive trail system connecting the community to several schools and a recreation centre.

Limited traffic interruption
The congested intersection site was very tight, so the bridge spans were assembled in 12 m sections on a nearby lay-down site. After being transported to the site, those sections were assembled into two longer spans and lifted into place during a single night closure.

The Algonquin team kept the project on time and on budget by maintaining close communication, having all components ready well ahead of the delivery deadline and offering on-site technical assistance.
