Algonquin Bridge supplied three Steel Girder Bridges to Rolling River First Nation in Manitoba to replace existing timber bridges that had reached the end of their usable lifespans. The new steel structures, designed to CL 625 vehicle loads, provide safe, reliable access for heavy, essential-service vehicles while improving the community’s resilience to extreme weather and climate challenges.
The new bridges have simple, low-maintenance gravel running surfaces over steel decking. Unlike concrete or asphalt decks, which may require resurfacing over time, gravel running surfaces have no visible expansion joints and are easily maintained with graders. The bridges’ elastomeric bearings are the only components expected to require replacement over their service life.
The community had experienced serious spring flooding in the past and school buses and water trucks had to be rerouted when floodwaters crested the bridges. The three new crossings provide reliable access even during challenging conditions.
Despite equipment and production challenges encountered during the project, clear communication with the contractor and the dedication of the Algonquin team helped keep the project moving and enabled the bridges to be completed as quickly as possible.
