In conjunction with a longer-term project to rehabilitate Highway 401, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation is relocating the Leslie Street East southbound off-ramp. This required the relocation of the Oriole GO Station’s pedestrian crossing over the LRT rail line farther south.
Pedestrian walkway built with the Algonquin Modular Panel Bridge System
In the process, Metrolinx decided to replace the existing narrow bridge with a wider version that would better accommodate the volume of commuters. The new bridge and piers were built with our Algonquin Modular Panel Bridge System, complete with an anti-slip deck surface and enclosed with a safety mesh. We shipped the new bridge in two preassembled 15 m sections.
Other Algonquin Modular Panel Bridges in urban Toronto
In 2015-16 we also designed and supplied five Algonquin Modular Panel Bridges to help Metrolinx and the City of Toronto buy some time to work through longer-term planning for their busy Lakeshore/Gardiner corridor. Three of the replacement bridges were installed over the Metrolinx rail corridor at the Dunn Avenue and Dowling Avenue approaches to Lakeshore Boulevard, the F.G. Gardiner Expressway and the waterfront trails. Two others were installed over the Gardiner itself.
The bridges are longer-term “temporary/permanent” solutions (10-15 years) to replace older concrete structures until planning and environmental assessments can be carried out to determine future design needs, including a possible widening of the rail corridor.
